Epsom salts have been used for centuries to help alleviate muscle soreness and other ailments. They got their name from the town of Epsom, England where they were discovered.
What Are Epsom Salts?
Epsom salts are a compound made up of magnesium, sulfur and oxygen, it’s chemically known as magnesium sulfate. While it shares a similar name and look to table salt, the two aren’t interchangeable.
Unlike table salt, epsom salts are quite bitter and unpalatable. Despite the taste, people are still known to mix epsom salts in water and drink it.
How Do Epsom Salts Work?
When they are added to water, they release the magnesium and sulfate ions as they dissolve.
What Are The Benefits of Epsom Salts?
Increased Magnesium Levels
Magnesium is a micro nutrient that most people do not get enough of through their day to day diet. The real benefits of epsom salts comes from the magnesium that is absorbed through the skin when the salts are used topically. A study by the University of Birmingham looked at 19 participants and found that all but 3 had increased levels of magnesium in their blood after using the salts for just 7 days!
Relaxation
While there have been statements made that epsom salts cannot be absorbed through the skin, the UoB study has shown that they can be. Regardless, there’s no denying that a spending 15 – 20 minutes in a bath, with or without the salts can help you relax. If you find yourself having issues with stress relief, taking a bath and practicing mindfulness is an excellent way to help clear your mind and make you feel better.
Exfoliation
Our epsom salts are fine grain, which means they dissolve quickly. However they also make for an amazing foot and body exfoliator. If you’ve never used a body scrub before be sure not to scrub too hard! Epsom salts can be rough on sensitive skin, so use them gently and add more water if you find it too rough for your skin type.
Promotes Sleep and Stress Reduction
Magnesium is an essential micro nutrient in the human body, as it plays an important role in supporting and sustaining life. It has anti inflammatory properties and makes our DNA less susceptible to oxidative stress.
It Can Be Used as a Washing Machine Cleaner
If you’ve got a washing machine that has visible signs of detergent buildup, simply run an empty cycle through with a cup of epsom salts. To make your rinse more effective, you can also add in one cup of distilled vinegar to make it an even more powerful cleaner!
